Huawei Mate 10 Lite Review

The Huawei Mate 10 Lite is a new phone trying to make its mark in the global market, although not for sale in the US.  It is a mid-priced Smartphone versus its Mate 10 series sibling. Today, let’s take a look and dig deeper into its functions and features to help you compare and decide later if it’s worth to be your new phone or not.

Design 8.4

The design is sturdy and premium being made with solid aluminum, making it a durable choice. Also, its design is compact and does not feel as bulky or heavy versus what we’d expect from a phone with a 5.9-inch size.  In addition, this phone has a taller 2:1 display, making it quite not very manageable to operate singlehandedly. The built feels and looks sturdy and substantial, making it a great investment for those looking for a compact Smartphone. Around the sides, they are quite curved that can be compared to an iPhone, but its back is flat. The power and volume buttons are located on the right side, making them very accessible.

Color 5.0

You won’t get quite as much as you would versus an AMOLED screen because this one has an LCD screen. Still, it is okay, but the color quality becomes average for that.    And then, the screen could look very bluish, and it’s a notable issue that the maker has to address.  However, there is a color temperature slider to adjust the settings if you are to lessen the impact of the issue although not a complete fix.

Fingerprint scanner 9.0

You will find that on the back to unlock the phone by simply tapping it. The scanner works impressively responsive and fast at that.  Worth mentioning is that the brand is the first one on the one-tap login function on the fingerprint.

Camera system 6.5

We found it a bit very close to the finger sensor being right above the reader. In that case, users might often click on the lower camera and smudge it if they’re unlocking the phone. It is a minor issue that does not feel right.  The phone’s dual camera system also sticks out although perfectly positioned on the center.  For that, you can still lay the phone on its back without any hassle.

Sound quality 4.5

It is average quality having no depth and with squeaky tonality in some occasions.

Screen brightness 7.0

It gets close to 500 NITS, and it comes without additional reflections. You won’t find it hard to read the screen even on a very bright sunny day.

Functionality and interface 6.8

Its custom Emotion UI makes the phone look different from Google’s design, a complete overhaul regarding the visual style of Android phones. Judging by the looks of the icons, the settings menu design and swipe down function, we can say that Huawei is trying to look up on to Apple for design.

The interface on the other hand is updated, and its Emotion UI supports a wide range of themes.  But then, Huawei didn’t stand out in this category. Nevertheless, the UI is running everything well, and it also has some unique features like the knuckle function, letting you use your knuckles in drawing letters to launch apps or snap a screenshot.

Waterproofing 4.5

There is no mention of that, and it is unfortunate. You should not get the phone wet or let any moisture build up on it.

Verdict

The Huawei Mate 10 Lite is a pretty decent mid-range phone. It has the basic functions or maybe even more than the phones in the same category and market. But perhaps, tweaking on sound quality and camera system can make it a better phone.
